Reach Out and Read

Reading with your child plays a huge part in their healthy development—it strengthens neural pathways and builds language skills. Studies prove it, kids who regularly hear words and conversations from caring adults perform better in school.

Reach Out and Read (ROR) partners with pediatricians to share books, tools and information to help you build a strong bond with your child through reading together. ROR is a national pediatric early relational health and early literacy program model endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, preparing children for school and life success.

Reading Together

WHAT TO EXPECT

Starting with their newborn visit, your child will receive a culturally and developmentally appropriate book during pediatric checkups (known as well-child visits)—but it’s more than just a free book. Since 90% of a child’s brain growth happens in the first five years of life, reading is an essential part of building:

  • Early language and literacy
  • Fine and gross motor skills
  • Social-emotional development
  • Cognitive skills

It’s a domino effect. Reading with your baby, toddler or preschooler helps build foundational communication skills and positive family relationships. This kind of support helps kids develop the resiliency and confidence they need to thrive in life.
