Bonding is that deep connection you feel with your baby—the one that makes you want to cuddle, comfort and care for them around the clock. It’s not always instant and that’s okay.
Whether you felt that connection right away or you’re still waiting for it to click, just know—you’re doing great and there are simple, loving ways to help build that strong attachment over time.
What is Bonding, Really?
Bonding is how babies learn they’re safe, loved and cared for. It’s your baby’s first relationship—and it sets the stage for how they connect with people for the rest of their life.
When you respond to your baby’s cries, look them in the eyes, talk to them or hold them skin-to-skin, you’re helping their brain grow and helping them feel secure. This trust helps your baby feel safe to explore and learn as they grow.
Easy Ways to Bond Every Day
You don’t need a fancy plan or extra time. Bonding happens in everyday moments—while you’re changing diapers, feeding, playing or just holding your baby.
Here are some simple things that help:
Touch and skin-to-skin cuddles
Snuggling your baby against your bare chest helps regulate their heartbeat, breathing and temperature—and helps you both feel calm and connected.
Eye contact and facial expressions
Look into your baby’s eyes. Smile. Make silly faces. Your baby will love watching you—and even try to copy you!
Talk, sing and narrate your day
Babies love the sound of your voice. Talk to them as you go about your day. Tell them what you’re doing, sing a song or just chat like they’re your best little sidekick.
Feeding time = bonding time
Whether you breastfeed or bottle-feed, hold your baby close and use this time to relax and connect.
Playtime and massage
Play peekaboo, gently stroke their arms and legs or give a baby massage (ask your doctor or nurse about how to start). Babies respond to gentle touch and movement.
Both parents matter
Dads, partners and other caregivers bond in their own special ways—by giving baths, changing diapers, baby-wearing or singing silly songs. There’s no one “right” way.
