You don’t have to do this alone. Whether you gave birth or not, both parents play a big role in caring for a new baby. Think of yourselves as a team—and the more you work together, the smoother things can go for your whole family.

Parents As Partners

You’re in This Together

Even small actions make a big difference. Here are some ways to support each other in those early days:

  • One parent can hold or walk with the baby while the other naps.
  • Bring your partner a glass of water or snack while they’re feeding the baby.
  • Keep things calm and quiet during feeding or skin-to-skin time.
  • Take turns getting up at night (even just for moral support).

Make Parenting Decisions as a Team

Newborn life is full of surprises and it helps to have a plan. Even if things don’t go exactly as planned (they rarely do!), being on the same page makes a big difference. Talk with your partner ahead of time about how you want to handle:

  • Feeding, bathing and sleep routines
  • Soothing a crying baby
  • Sharing housework and errands

Share the Work—and the Wins

Taking care of a baby is a lot of work. But sharing the load can bring you closer—and give each of you time to rest, reset or just breathe. Here are some ideas:

  • Take turns with diapers, baths and bottle washing.
  • Divide up shopping, cooking and cleaning.
  • Give each other mini breaks—even 10 minutes of quiet time helps.
  • Focus on bonding with your baby, not having a spotless house.

Remember, the best thing your baby needs is love from both of you.
