There was a time when Ramirez had family members watch her oldest daughter, Jewel. \u201cShe would be in front of a television all day,\u201d said Ramirez. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E49\"><span id=\"E50\">Then she applied and received a scholarship to attend the Early Education Child Care Center in <\/span><span id=\"E52\">Sacaton<\/span><span id=\"E54\">, which participates in First Things First\u2019s (FTF) signature program, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qualityfirstaz.com\">Quality First<\/a>. Her scholarship was one of 48 Quality First scholarships funded by FTF <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstthingsfirst.org\/regions\/gila-river-indian-community\/\">Gila River Indian Community<\/a> Regional Partnership Council in State Fiscal Year 2019. Quality First scholarships help eligible families afford to send their child to quality child care centers and preschools. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E55\"><span id=\"E56\">FTF\u2019s Quality First program partners with child care and preschool providers across Arizona to improve the quality of early learning. Quality First funds quality improvements that research proves help children thrive, such as training for teachers to expand their skills and to help create learning environments that nurture the emotional, social and academic development of every child. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Quality First<\/p>\n<p>Research shows that quality child care and preschool programs help children learn and develop important skills and abilities \u2014 like self-control, focus and self-esteem \u2014 that prepare them for success in school and in life.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about Quality First<\/p>\n<p id=\"E57\"><span id=\"E58\">\u201cJewel started at the center when she was 7 months old,\u201d said Ramirez. \u201cHer motor skills weren\u2019t developed. She flopped and didn\u2019t hold her head up. Her teachers worked with her on motor activities, like counting and scooping.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E59\"><span id=\"E60\">Jewel started to develop at a fast rate and performing above average. Now 2, Jewel has a vocabulary of almost 100 words, knows the alphabet and can count to 10. She\u2019s also developed social skills to interact well with her teachers and other children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E61\"><span id=\"E62\">When Ramirez had her second daughter, Ella, she applied for a second Quality First scholarship and received it. Ramirez said Ella is now 3 months old and receiving wonderful care. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E63\"><span id=\"E64\">\u201cElla needs comfort, embracing and holding. They do that,\u201d said Ramirez. \u201cThey hold the children like they were their own. They cradle and rock and sing to them, everything a mother would do.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E65\"><span id=\"E66\">The Quality First teachers are trained to be attuned to each child\u2019s needs. Ramirez said she\u2019s seen that in the way they treat her children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E67\"><span id=\"E68\">\u201cJewel\u2019s teachers really work with her one-on-one,\u201d Ramirez said. \u201cShe\u2019s also in her terrible twos, so they discipline her right away by having her take a seat next to the teacher. She\u2019s learning to say \u2018thank you\u2019 or apologize. She loves going there because she\u2019s treated with respect, and she is learning.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E69\"><span id=\"E70\">Ramirez also likes the way the teachers interact with her by providing photos throughout the day and a daily form that reports what her children ate, when diapers are changed, nap times and what they played with and learned. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E71\"><span id=\"E72\">\u201cI get paid a little more than minimum wage,\u201d said Ramirez. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be able to afford to the quality care my children deserve without these scholarships. Both of my children are performing above average and receiving quality care.
