Your oral health affects your baby&#8217;s health."},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>When you&#8217;re pregnant, your health affects your baby\u2019s health.<\/h2>\n<p>Just like eating right, taking vitamins and seeing your doctor while you\u2019re pregnant, it\u2019s important to take care of your oral health, too.<\/p>\n<h2>Problems with your teeth and gums can be worse during pregnancy.<\/h2>\n<p>And they could harm your baby. Your baby could be born too early (pre-term) or too small, and that can affect your baby\u2019s health and development. Gum disease is caused by germs in your mouth. Signs include red, sore and bleeding gums, but you may have no symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent these problems:<\/p>\n<h2>1) Keep your teeth and gums healthy while you&#8217;re pregnant.<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36204 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.firstthingsfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/5_teeth-when-pregnant.png\" alt=\"5_teeth when pregnant\" width=\"101\" height=\"100\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Floss your teeth every day.<\/li>\n<li>Drink plenty of water.<\/li>\n<li>If you have morning sickness, rinse your mouth using a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water after you get sick.<\/li>\n<li>Eat more healthy snacks and avoid junk food and candy.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid drinking soda and other sugary drinks.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t use tobacco products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2) See a dentist. It&#8217;s important, and it&#8217;s safe.<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36205 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.firstthingsfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/6_dentist-when-pregnant.png\" alt=\"6_dentist when pregnant\" width=\"101\" height=\"100\" \/>Having your teeth checked and cleaned twice a year helps cut down on germs in your mouth. Dental care during pregnancy \u2014 including x-rays \u2014 is safe for you and your baby. And AHCCCS-eligible pregnant women under 21 have dental coverage.<\/p>\n<p>If you need help finding a dentist:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask your doctor or healthcare provider for a referral.<\/li>\n<li>You can also ask at Head Start or WIC.<\/li>\n<li>Call AHCCCS at 1-855-432-7587 to discuss your emergency dental coverage.<\/li>\n<li>For more information, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azdhs.gov\/prevention\/womens-childrens-health\/oral-health\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">azdhs.gov<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Don\u2019t share germs after your baby is born.<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36200 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.firstthingsfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/1_dont-share-germs.png\" alt=\"1_don't share germs\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Your baby is born with 20 little teeth growing under their gums and no germs in their mouth. But germs are easily passed from your mouth to your baby \u2014 like when you share spoons, food or lick their pacifier \u2014 and that can lead to cavities in your baby&#8217;s mouth. So do your best to not put things from your mouth into your baby\u2019s.
